Kitchen 101
I always find it funny when people tell me that they can't make certain things because they don't have the right tools. So I thought I'd make a thing of sharing a few (5) tips that I've picked up along the way and a few simple gadgets that you probably already have in your kitchen that you can put to good use.
I'll make this a weekly post for as long as I have content. Let me know in the comments if there's something you want to know and I'll share in the next post or I'll find out if I don't already know ;)
1. Use an empty jar or wine bottle as a rolling pin. This is a common one that I think most people know. Make sure you wash the bottle or jar in warm soapy water and then rinse in hot water as hot as your hands can handle to sterilise the bottle.
2. Use a fork to juice your fruit. Start by rolling the fruit on the table to loosen up the flesh and get it ready for juicing. Cut the fruit in two across the middle not through the stem at the top. Next you'll want to get a fork and as you squeeze the juice, twist the fork gently in each of the segments.
3. Use lemon juice and milk for buttermilk. For every cup of milk, add a teaspoon of lemon juice. Then leave it for at least 5 minutes to begin to curdle. Yes, it needs to look a little bit lumpy like milk that's gone off. That's it!! You don't have to rush around a bunch of supermarkets for buttermilk.
4. Use ice cube bags to freeze your stock. The effort to pop the cubes out of ice trays sometimes just isn't worth it! Pour your excess stock into those disposable ice bags rather than an ice tray and you can just cut out what you need and put into your soups etc.
5. Freeze your banana portions to chill your smoothies and to give them a refreshing creamy texture.
Hope there's something there you haven't tried yet. Next week....gadgets!!
